Olympia Airglide 7: Safety, Comfort, and Versatility

At 12 years old, I clearly remember asking my parents for the first time, “Can I get my motorcycle licence before my driver’s licence?” Their answer was immediate and unwavering: absolutely not—it was too dangerous.

A few years later, at 19, I climbed onto a motorcycle for the very first time during a riding course… and promptly dropped it.

Thankfully, nothing more than a bruised ego, but that first experience quickly taught me just how important proper riding gear really is. Even at low speeds, you realize that quality protection can make all the difference.

Now, after ten years in the saddle, I’ve experienced just about every riding condition imaginable: scorching summer heat, rainy end-of-season rides, crisp autumn mornings during peak fall colours, and those perfect mild days with a gentle breeze.

Over time, I’ve developed a clear idea of what I expect from my riding gear: it has to be comfortable, breathable, and above all, provide serious protection without compromise.

Motorcycling is my primary mode of transportation in Montreal. Throughout the summer, I rely on my bike for almost everything—commuting to work, heading to the gym, meeting friends for dinner, and running errands. It’s a lifestyle that demands dependable gear, because your motorcycle becomes much more than a source of freedom—it’s your everyday vehicle.

This year, thanks to Motovan, I had the opportunity to test a brand-new riding outfit over the past few weeks.

The weather couldn’t have been more unpredictable, giving me the chance to experience almost every condition imaginable. From sudden downpours and strong winds to sweltering heat, I was able to put Olympia’s Airglide riding suit through its paces in a wide variety of situations. I can honestly say it checks every box for someone who rides every day.

The jacket

The jacket is constructed from 500D and 1000D Cordura®, a material well known for its excellent abrasion resistance, providing a high level of protection in the event of a crash. It also comes equipped with CE-approved armour in the elbows, shoulders, and back, immediately inspiring confidence the moment you put it on.

What impressed me most, however, was its versatility. The removable thermal liner keeps you comfortable on cooler mornings, while the Ballistic Airflow mesh panels provide outstanding ventilation during the hottest days of summer.

The biggest standout feature, in my opinion, is the included waterproof jacket, which can be worn either underneath or over the main riding jacket.

When your motorcycle is your daily transportation, staying dry isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. That extra layer completely changes the riding experience when the rain starts falling.

I also appreciated the jacket’s fit. It’s tailored without feeling restrictive, making it equally comfortable whether you’re stopped at a traffic light or spending hours in the saddle.

The pants

The matching pants are built from the same durable 500D and 1000D Cordura® construction and feature removable knee and hip protectors. Like the jacket, they incorporate mesh panels that promote excellent airflow—especially welcome during hot weather or longer rides through the city. Full-length leg zippers further improve ventilation whenever extra airflow is needed.

The adjustable waistband provides a secure fit without sacrificing comfort, and I particularly liked the expandable lower-leg panels that make putting on and taking off riding boots quick and easy. They’re the kind of thoughtful details that make a noticeable difference when you ride regularly.

The Airglide suit, it’s yes!

Overall, I found the entire suit extremely comfortable to wear. It’s adaptable, practical, and thoughtfully designed.

I especially appreciated the attention to detail: multiple storage pockets that make the jacket highly functional for everyday use, numerous adjustment points at the wrists, waist, and ankles, the ability to zip the jacket and pants together into a one-piece suit, and the soft-lined collar that helps prevent neck irritation during long days on the road.

My only criticism would be its weight, which is slightly heavier than some of the lighter riding gear available today. That said, when it comes to meaningful protection, it’s a compromise that feels both reasonable and worthwhile.

One last gift

Motovan spoiled me this year by also giving me the opportunity to test a new helmet: the Zox Envoy, in red—my favourite colour.

Ever since I started riding, I’ve always worn full-face helmets. I’ve always appreciated the sense of security they provide, but I have to admit they can become quite hot during peak summer temperatures or while sitting in stop-and-go city traffic.

The Zox Envoy is not only comfortable and easy to put on, but its modular flip-up chin bar made a noticeable difference whenever I was stopped in traffic.

It allowed me to cool down during those moments while still providing excellent protection once the helmet was closed again. It’s exactly the kind of flexibility that makes everyday urban riding much more enjoyable.

The ventilation system also contributes significantly to the overall comfort. With intake vents at the front and exhaust vents at the rear, airflow moves efficiently through the helmet.

Of course, no helmet can completely eliminate the heat on a 35°C summer day, but the Zox Envoy certainly makes those conditions much more manageable—especially for someone like me who tends to overheat easily.

Another feature I really appreciated was the integrated sun visor. It’s so discreet and well designed that I barely noticed it at first, but after a few rides it quickly became one of my favourite features. On warm days, it provides excellent eye protection while allowing for better airflow than wearing sunglasses underneath a full-face helmet.

If riding has taught me one thing over the past ten years, it’s that the freedom and excitement motorcycles offer always come with responsibility. Investing in quality gear isn’t just part of the experience—it’s what allows you to enjoy every ride with confidence, no matter the conditions.

The 12-year-old girl who dreamed of riding motorcycles would undoubtedly be proud to see me living that dream today. But she’d probably feel even better knowing I’m doing it with reliable gear that’s truly designed to protect me on the road.
