Gaspésie by snowmobile: a turnkey itinerary to experience winter in all its glory
Thanks to a collaboration with Chicks And Machines and Tourisme Gaspésie, we had the opportunity to explore the southern Gaspé Peninsula by snowmobile.
This adventure, which we’re sharing today, is an invitation to discover breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and local flavors, all at the pace of snow-covered trails. Whether you’re a snowmobiling enthusiast or simply curious, this route is the perfect gateway to one of Quebec’s most beautiful winter destinations.
Carleton-sur-Mer: Chaleur Bay as a Starting Point
The adventure begins in New Richmond, where you’ll pick up your snowmobiles at Sports BG. Then, it’s off to Carleton-sur-Mer, on the stunning Chaleur Bay. This first outing allows you to soak in the beauty of the landscape.
The summit of Bouchard Mountain offers a spectacular view of the bay and the surrounding mountains. A perfect hike to warm up and capture the moment.
For the night, the Riôtel Carleton-sur-Mer – Baie Bleue welcomes travelers in a friendly atmosphere. Its Pub Saint-Joseph is an excellent choice for your first local dinner.

From New Richmond to Chandler: Rivers and Lagoons
- The next day, we retraced our steps, heading towards New Richmond along the TQ-5 trail. The drive offered stunning views of the Cascapédia River and its magnificent covered bridge in Saint-Edgar, two perfect stops for photos and exploring these beautiful spots.
- The day continued east towards Chandler, with several highlights:
- the Malin woods, a lookout offering panoramic views of the river;
- the Port-Daniel lagoon, where the sea and mountains meet;
- the lakes around the RORY shelter, perfect for observing the frozen landscape.
For the night, two options are available depending on the chosen route: the Chandler Motel or the Fraser Motel. Accessible directly via a well-maintained snowmobile trail, the Chandler Motel offers a package including accommodation, meals, and access to the spa.
Its Resto-Pub Ô P’tit Café also offers a unique culinary experience that will satisfy your appetite before or after a great day of snowmobiling. The Motel Fraser, also located in Chandler, is close to the trails and various attractions. For dining, the Le Sieur de Pabos restaurant, located within the Motel Fraser, delights with its Gaspé-inspired dishes.

Heading towards Gaspé: Between Forests and Cliffs
The route continues towards Gaspé along Trail 597, which winds through diverse landscapes. This section is distinguished by its contrasts: deep forests, cliffs where icefalls sometimes form, and winding climbs ideal for thrill-seekers.
The Fourches Shelter, at the trail intersection, offers a welcome break to warm up.
Upon arrival, the Hôtel Plante, the Rodeway Inn, and the Hôtel Baker welcome travelers to the heart of Gaspé, just steps away from excellent restaurants like Le Brise-Bise and Le TÉTÛ at the Hôtel Baker.
From Gaspé to Percé: The Charm of the Rock
The drive between Gaspé and Percé is short but memorable. You take Highway 5 (TQ-5) along the rivers, catching glimpses of the bay through the trees.
As you approach Percé, the landscape opens up to the Atlantic Ocean and its iconic Percé Rock, which rises majestically offshore.
The Gaspésie Base Camp in Coin-du-Banc is a unique stopover. With its warm atmosphere and spas under the stars, it’s the perfect place to end the day. For a taste of local cuisine, try the tapas at Auberge chez Pit, the coffee at Nath & Compagnie, or the takeout dishes from Marché Ami.

Return to Chandler and New Richmond: The Ultimate Getaway
Before heading back, a final outing on the local trails around Percé offers spectacular views of the Route d’Irlande area and Mont Sainte-Anne, two vantage points providing a unique perspective of the rock. Photography enthusiasts will find exceptional panoramas, especially at sunrise or sunset.
Then it’s time to get back on the TQ-5 towards Chandler and New Richmond. The rest stops and small restaurants in Grande-Rivière, New Carlisle, and Bonaventure offer perfect places to stop for a final meal on the road.
Practical Tips for a Successful Adventure
- Prepare your gear: snowmobile clothing, warm layers, a swimsuit for the hot tubs, as well as snacks and water for dinners in the shelters.
- Book your evening meals: several popular restaurants, such as Le Sieur de Pabos or Pub Saint-Joseph, recommend making reservations in advance.
- Use the iMotoneige app: an essential tool for planning distances, checking trail conditions, and locating rest stops.
- Respect the environment: the Gaspé Peninsula is a precious territory. It is important to respect wildlife, such as moose. Keep your distance and stop to let them pass. Staying on marked trails and taking your garbage with you are also simple but essential actions.
- Be open to surprises: many viewpoints are not listed. Taking the time to explore and stop is often the best way to experience the adventure.
