Can-Am’s New Electric Motorcycles: Power, Versatility, and Eco-Friendliness at the Heart of the Austin Test Ride
There are moments when you feel like you’re experiencing the future, and that’s exactly what I felt while testing Can-Am’s new electric motorcycles amidst the stunning landscapes of Austin, Texas.
Whether riding through city streets, along sprawling country roads, or on off-road trails calling for adventure, these two models – the Can-Am Origin and the Can-Am Pulse – truly capture the essence of electric riding without sacrificing fun, power, or freedom.
Can-Am Origin: A Versatile Motorcycle
The Can-Am Origin, with its rugged yet modern look, immediately reminds you of the brand’s motocross legacy. But this time, the Origin races towards the future with a 35 kW (47 HP) electric motor powered by Rotax E-Power technology. Its acceleration (0 – 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds) is impressive.
The off-road test revealed the machine’s agility and finesse. Unlike a gas-powered motorcycle, the Origin is incredibly quiet, but it doesn’t lose any thrill with its instant torque, allowing it to climb slopes and tackle rough terrains with ease.
The absence of engine noise also lets you fully enjoy the sounds of nature – a true pleasure for any rider who loves exploring off the beaten path.
The original tires, Dunlop† D605 90/90 R21 (front) and Dunlop D605 120/80 R18 (rear), are sufficient for off-roading and perform well on the road.
The KYB front and rear suspension, with an impressive 255 mm of travel, is designed to absorb the shocks of more extreme terrains. The riding position allows you to stand comfortably, and even while seated, the bike has great ergonomics and is comfortable.
Its six different modes, including two off-road settings, let you ride safely in any weather or road conditions.
With a range of approximately 145 kilometers (in the city), it’s more than enough to set off on an exploration. Charging takes around 50 minutes (20 to 80% in 50 minutes – with a Level 2 charger).
I understand that for some, this might not seem like enough, especially for off-road adventures. However, over time, battery range will undoubtedly improve. The technology is still in its early stages, and eventually, the range will allow for longer trips without recharging, and charging stations will become more accessible.
The active and passive regeneration technology, which I found particularly useful on steep descents or when decelerating without using the brakes, not only enhances safety but also extends battery life.
If you want to slow down, much like downshifting, simply release the throttle or twist it in the opposite direction for smooth deceleration and battery recharge.
Moreover, there are several modes available to adjust the deceleration intensity when releasing the throttle or twisting it forward.
In the city, the Origin performs just as well. It’s not just for those who live in the countryside or love adventure. In urban areas, it navigates traffic like a fish in water, agile and responsive in city traffic, while its imposing presence doesn’t go unnoticed.
In terms of weight, the bike is relatively light at 412 lbs. At 5 feet 6 inches tall, I felt comfortable on the bike with its 34-inch seat height. The Origin is available in two versions: Origin and Origin ’73, which includes some additional features. The base price is $18,999.
Can-Am Pulse: The Ideal Companion for Urban Life
Next, I headed into the heart of Austin to test the Can-Am Pulse, designed for urban commutes.
Its sleek and lightweight design is a real asset for navigating traffic. Powered by a 35 kW (47 HP) motor, the Pulse responds instantly to any throttle input (0 – 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds), offering a smooth and fluid ride.
Once again, Rotax E-Power technology shines, and each start is pure joy. I weaved through the busy streets of Austin, and I must say that the absence of engine noise made every trip even more zen, while also reducing noise pollution.
What truly impressed me was the minimal maintenance required by the Pulse. No more oil changes or exhaust systems to replace, making it an ideal option for those seeking a practical, economical, and environmentally friendly motorcycle.
The range of 160 kilometers (in the city) is more than sufficient for a full day of urban commuting, and thanks to fast charging (20 to 80% in 50 minutes – with a Level 2 charger), a quick break is all you need before hitting the road again.
It also features the same active and passive regeneration technology as the Origin. Both bikes come with reverse gear, which is especially handy when parking!
Depending on weather and road conditions, you can choose from four modes: Normal, ECO, Rain, and Sport+.
Both the Pulse and Origin come equipped with a touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and BRP GO!. You can access apps to locate charging stations, listen to your favorite music or podcasts, and much more.
By pairing your device with BRP GO!, you can also check essential information about your vehicle, such as battery level, charge status, and location.
The Pulse is also available in two versions: Pulse and Pulse ’73, which comes with additional features. The base price is $18,299.
Electric Riding: Combining Power and Simplicity
Skeptics often wonder:
Can electric motorcycles truly compete with their gas-powered counterparts in terms of performance?
With Can-Am’s models, I can confidently say the answer is yes, with additional benefits!
The instant torque and lack of manual gears make riding incredibly simple and intuitive. These bikes open up new opportunities for a wider audience.
As a rider accustomed to gas-powered machines, I was pleasantly surprised by the smoothness. The joy of riding is there. At first, you may instinctively look for gears to shift, but you quickly get used to and appreciate the simplicity of the ride.
On country roads, the silence of these motorcycles made me rediscover the joy of riding, with no mechanical noise to drown out the natural soundscape.
The ride becomes almost meditative, a perfect fusion of technology and nature. For riders looking to reduce their environmental impact without sacrificing the sense of freedom, this is simply a dream come true.
Ergonomic and Innovative Design
In terms of aesthetics, both models turn heads – you could feel it in the streets of Austin. Their design is a perfect blend of aggression and modernity.
The sleek lines and aerodynamics not only enhance performance but also improve ergonomics. Whether on the Origin or the Pulse, both bikes adapt perfectly to your posture, whether for long trips or weaving through city traffic.
Details like intuitive controls, the charging system, and the durability of the materials make these bikes ideal companions for riders, regardless of experience level.
Conclusion: A Promising Future for Can-Am and Electric Motorcycles
Testing these bikes in Austin confirmed what I expected from Can-Am: a capacity to push boundaries, innovate, and create machines that combine fun, power, and environmental responsibility.
Whether you’re an adventurer or a city rider looking to make your journeys greener, the Can-Am Origin and Can-Am Pulse offer tailored, high-performance, and exciting solutions.
These motorcycles embody the future of riding: cleaner, simpler to maintain, yet still as exhilarating to ride. A true revolution for riders and a new era for responsible riding.
