Motorcycle Itinerary: 4 Perfect Days in New York State
When I create a motorcycle itinerary, I typically opt for one of two approaches, depending on the purpose of my trip.
When adventure calls and I want to experience as much scenery as possible, I develop what I call a “linear” itinerary: it’s a single, long loop with home as the starting and ending point. Each evening, the accommodation is in a different place.
I like this approach because it allows me to cover more regions and satisfy my thirst for a change of scenery.
When there’s a specific region I want to enjoy over several days, on the other hand, I opt instead for an approach I call a “flower” itinerary (cute, right?).
I create daily itineraries that form little loops (or petals) around a single accommodation point. I find this approach more relaxing, as you don’t have to unpack and re-pack every day. What’s more, the flower itinerary allows you to take your time and really get to know a region.
On several occasions, I’ve discovered sublime places during a linear escapade, and returned to them later in petal itinerary mode, to spend more time there.
New York State – and more specifically, the Adirondacks – is one of those places.
Today, I present a 4-day itinerary – a flower-style itinerary – with Montreal as the point of departure and return.
Conceived after long hours spent reading various blogs, travel articles, and discussion forums, I can confidently say that my itinerary brings together the best of the best of roads that New York State has to offer.
So if you’re looking for a breathtaking yet relaxing itinerary for your next long weekend, look no further; here it is!
Day 1: Malone, Tupper Lake, Long Lake
Total: 307 kilometers

And we’re off!
On the first day, we head South through the Chateaugay-Herdman border crossing. The great advantage of this small crossing is that it’s not very busy, so passage is fast and almost guaranteed.
As soon as you cross the border, you quickly forget the poor quality of our Quebec roads and immediately begin savouring the smooth, satisfying pavement.
The first stop is in Malone: a quaint, quiet little town close to the border (about 20 minutes). It’s a good idea to fill up here, since we’ll soon be in the mountains, with fewer gas stations available.
That said, Malone is worthy of much more than just a quick stop for gas; you’ll find an array of charming old buildings.
I found the church, train station, and library particularly memorable.
If you feel like it, I recommend taking some extra time to wander around, be it on your motorcycle or on foot.
Next, we take the NY-30S, a magnificent, winding road through a sublime region dotted with peaceful lakes.
For accommodation, I booked 3 nights at the North Creek Lodge at Gore Mountain.
This small, modest but friendly motel is centrally located and ideal for exploring the region’s superb roads.
The staff are warm and welcoming, and you quickly feel part of the family. The motel’s restaurant is a popular gathering point in the area, and the food is good.
After dropping off the luggage at the motel, a quick beer at the end of the day is well deserved, so it’s back on the bike and off to Lemon Tree Brewery, a mere 30 minutes away.
While you’re there, why not stop off at the local market to buy a few beers and cigars to enjoy by the fire back at the motel?
Day 2: Mountains Galore
Total: 442 kilometers

For today’s ride, we’re heading Northwest on a counter-clockwise loop that climbs North to Lake Placid, then Southwest to Otter Lake and back East to the motel via Higgins Bay and Speculaor.
The road to Lake Placid is absolutely breathtaking.
At times, the road follows a creek at the foot of towering mountains, and although you’re at the foot of the mountains, you feel as if you’re on top of the world.
With a departure around 9 a.m., you’ll arrive in Lake Placid in time for a stroll and a good lunch. I recommend the Smoke Signals restaurant, which has a beautiful terrace right on the lake and offers the best chicken wings I’ve ever had.
On the way there, my eyes were drawn to a motorcycle with a road bike cleverly attached to it; I’d never seen anything like it! I simply had to talk to the bike’s owner to get him to tell me his story.
Let me introduce Rob, a passionate and friendly motorcyclist who had just embarked on a thrilling adventure from Virginia to Nova Scotia. I was inspired by his contagious passion, his good humor and, above all, his ingenuity!
Day 3: Lake George, New York
Total: 90 kilometers

On the third day, we take it easy and spend the day in Lake George. Home to countless small boutiques, activities of all kinds and friendly restaurants, Lake George is a tourist attraction in the region, and there really is something there for everyone.
Take this opportunity to do some discount shopping at the Outlets at Lake George!
For a sure shot for dinner, stop off at The Garrison before heading back to the motel. A relaxed atmosphere and a delicious menu await you. Bonus points for the coatroom entrance, where you can store your motorcycle gear during your stay.
Day 4: Return to Montreal
Total: 483 kilometers
Day four of this itinerary is a sight to behold; in my opinion, it’s the best day of all. Unfortunately, one of the roads is closed for the rest of summer 2024, so Google Maps is blocking that option for now. Instead of sharing a single link, then, I’m detailing the steps here:
- Motel – Lake George – Ticonderoga – North Hudson via la 9N

Here, you’ll be blown away by the famous Route 9N along Lake George. I didn’t want it to end!
2. North Hudson – Port Henry via la Ensign Pond Road
The Ensign Pond Road is the section of road that is unfortunately currently inaccessible, so you’ll have to wait until the work is completed before enjoying this road, which I think is one of the best on this itinerary.
It’s definitely worth the wait!
3. Port Henry – State Route 9 via Tracy Road
Tracy Road is yet another pleasant, winding road, with no perpendicular roads to distract us from the beauty of the landscape.
At the exit, you can either hop on 87 north to the border, or continue a little further to join State Route 9 to Plattsburgh if you prefer to stay on quieter roads.
I recommend the latter, as it’s much more pleasant that way.
4. Back to Montreal
On the way back, I recommend a quick stop in Plattsburg for a roadside meal before heading home.
I always go to Panera Bread; it’s a favourite of mine. It’ll also give you a chance to take a short break before tackling the more monotonous road back to Montreal.
Final Thoughts…
Throughout my research, some of the most popular roads in the region came up again and again, including Ensign Pond Road, Tracy Road, 9N and 73 near Lake Placid.
This itinerary will allow you to explore all these beautiful roads in only 4 days, while also having a great time resting, enjoying good food and other local products, and meeting fantastic people.
It certainly won’t be the last time I use this itinerary, and I look forward to hearing about your experience as you explore it too.
Have a great trip!
