Visiting Ecuador by motorcycle: absolutely breathtaking!
I am writing this article while sitting in the airport in Mexico, between two flights back from an incredible trip: visiting Ecuador by motorcycle.
I was visiting a friend who owns a charming inn on the seaside in Crucita. Therefore, I decided that I would spend 3 weeks discovering this country that was foreign to me. I also knew that I wanted to ride a motorcycle. What a pleasure to be able to combine my two passions: travelling and motorcycles!
The story really started during the Motorcycle Show. At that time, I already knew I was going to Ecuador; I had already bought my ticket.
I walk down the aisles of the show, visiting different dealerships, and then, like a mirage, I see a rental and tour booth in Ecuador. I rub my eyes; what are the odds?
I met Court at this booth, who is the owner of Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental. I chatted with him a bit and collected some information. When I went to visit the company’s website, I knew right away that THIS is where I was going to rent my bike. Not only did I want to rent my bike there, but I wanted to do one of their self-guided tours.
Before telling you about my crazy adventure, I want to take the time to tell you about this magnificent company that will undoubtedly make you want to go on an adventure in Ecuador.
Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental
Founded in 2009 by the lovely Sylvain and Court, the company is designed and thought for real adventure lovers.
At Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental , you can simply rent a motorcycle, a 4X4, a scooter, a bicycle or choose from guided tours or self-guided tours.
You can choose from longer or shorter tours depending on your needs and desires, or simply rent a vehicle; this is where the strength of their company lies. No matter what kind of traveller you are, you will find what you are looking for!
When I got there, I was impressed by the number of bikes available. There are bikes for all types of roads and riders. They are well maintained and organized in order, so you can leave with peace of mind.
I was mostly impressed by their warm service. When you arrive, a wonderful team takes care of you with passion and good humor, so that you immediately feel part of the family and you feel confident.
They stand out from other companies with little extras such as
- unlimited mileage,
- 24-hour assistance,
- they replace your bike in case of breakage,
- they offer very spacious cases on all bikes,
- no hidden fees and so on!
Much appreciated little extras!
Self-guided tour
I finally chose the self-guided tour, more precisely the Self-Guided Cloudforest, Coast and Craters Tour .
Originally, it is a 7-day tour, but it can also be extended or adapted according to your needs. As I wanted to visit my friend in Crucita, they added a stop in this village. So I completed the first two days of the tour and then took a short 10-day break at my friend’s place. Once these 10 days were over, I went back on the road for the five remaining days of the tour.
The most interesting thing was that I was able to keep my bike during my stay in Crucita.
I’m sure you’re wondering:
What exactly is a self-guided tour?
It’s like a guided tour, but without a guide! You leave with a pre-programmed GPS, with a precise itinerary and a bunch of places where you can stop. I was given a detailed itinerary for each day, including the number of kilometers, the places to see, the altitude, the driving time with stops…
Court also made sure to explain to me the day-by-day route, giving me precious tips.
On your GPS, you can even choose if you want more or less off-road. Each day is presented with the option of paved roads or off-road. Depending on your mood in the morning, you can choose if you feel wild and want to take the roads off the beaten path or if you want a more relaxed day on the paved roads. I loved this feature!
I’m not much of a tour girl, but this is the perfect compromise. You go on an adventure, but with some structure. The hotels are booked in advance, you have options to stop for dinner, suggestions for activities, in short you are guided, but still in control of your day.
My Motorcycle
As I mentioned above, the choice of bikes at Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental is impressive. I chose the Hero XPulse 200.
Why this motorcycle?
For its exceptional handling. I knew I was going to do a lot of off-roading. I didn’t want a motorcycle that was too big or too tall – even though mine is very tall – because I was going to venture into the unknown. I needed to feel confident and in control, and that’s exactly what this motorcycle gave me. I loved it!
Court suggested this motorcycle to me and I’m so glad I listened to him. They will be able to guide you as well on your choice of motorcycle depending on what you choose to experience.
Before leaving
I talked about it briefly; before leaving, they take the time to explain what is planned each day. I was also given a course on how to drive in Ecuador.
It’s quite different from Quebec, as you can imagine, and the advice was very welcome, because driving in Ecuador is a sport!
Also, they provide you with all the tools you might need to fix a flat tire or a small mechanical breakdown. They also provide you with a satellite phone with their registered number in case of emergency.
If you don’t have all your equipment, they can lend you some too. ❤
My best advice is to make sure you have all your equipment, because in Ecuador you will encounter all kinds of temperatures, especially when you venture into the mountains.
In short, it really is an excellent service to leave reassured and well prepared.
Stay tuned, because I’m preparing two beautiful articles about my complete adventure. You’ll see, it’s breathtaking!
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me or to contact the Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental team.
I encourage you to do it and to live the trip of your life!
